When the unthinkable first
truly lurches from Pandora's box
arms akimbo and eyes full of fire
when he has taken that long-legged stride
into reality
yours
he does not then return
the shadow of his clammy hands
reaches over artex ceilings
and threatens at any moment
to pierce your life with cold elongated fingers
and snatch something away
and you know that when this happens
you will be bereaved of another treasured belief
wrenching the frail old man from the wizard
leaving you feeling as if all the promises that have ever been made
are in pieces around your feet
and facing you again with a world you had not prepared yourself to see
