Bookended

When we were married
the day we took those vows
and then all the days after
we were all adventure
and what next
and journey
with the promise of new things
the promise of learning more
about you
about me
about us
about life
time stretched out before us with possibility

And now, I ache with the finality of death
I weep at all the things I have had to
put into boxes and close the lid on
I'm exhausted with the energy it takes
to withdraw from the fantasy of tomorrow

I feel like the memories of our togetherness
that once pledged a future to the horizon
now sit bookended
begun with a meeting and ended with a death
