My ring finger aches
a throbbing and a tenderness
where it was cleft in two
when I was eight
the faint silver smile
on my pink skin
grinning its tale of splitting
and stitching
and healing
innocently predicting a future
it could not foresee

ReplyDelete(I have never linked that accident to your ring finger... it brings it all back, the shock, the difficult decision in the middle of the night, the cries of pain, the stitching together while you listened to stories and then... the long, long time for the healing, that seemed so slow, that stopped you doing so much you did before the accident... and after all this time a scar)
And actually...you were six, not eight...even more amazing that you dealt with it so bravely..and curiously. The hospital staff thought so too. But then - brave and curious could describe you now too...
